Amsterdam Overhoeks
Overhoeks sits on the north bank of the IJ, directly across from Amsterdam Centraal. It's a neighbourhood built from scratch in the last decade: residential streets, waterfront terraces, real restaurants, and a free 24-hour ferry that puts you at Centraal in two minutes.
Overhoeks was a Shell laboratory complex for most of the 20th century. The redevelopment that followed produced something rare in Amsterdam: a waterfront neighbourhood designed for residential life, not retrofitted into it.
The streets are quiet. There's green space, playgrounds, and open water visible from most angles. The A'DAM Tower marks the western edge: a landmark you quickly stop noticing and start just using, whether that's for dinner, drinks, or the view from the top.
What sets Overhoeks apart from other Amsterdam neighbourhoods is the combination of calm and connectivity. You can cycle to the waterfront in two minutes. You can be on a train at Amsterdam Centraal in ten. And you come home to a neighbourhood that doesn't feel like a transit corridor.
The area continues to develop: more amenities, a growing restaurant scene, and new residents who chose this location deliberately. It's not hidden; it's chosen.
The IJ waterfront here is genuinely pleasant to walk along: it's not industrial, and it's not tourist-facing. It's a stretch of water with views of the Centraal station skyline, houseboats to the east, and the open harbour to the west.
Pllek, one of Amsterdam's most-loved beach bars and music venues, is a five-minute walk. So is Walhalla, a craft brewery with a tap room worth knowing about. The restaurants within walking distance of Badhuiskade 217 are specific, well-regarded places: not chains.
For families, there are playgrounds and green spaces woven into the neighbourhood. For professionals commuting into the city or to Schiphol, the connection times are difficult to beat from almost anywhere in Amsterdam.
The free GVB ferry runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It takes two minutes to cross and drops you at the eastern side of Amsterdam Centraal. Walk six minutes from the apartment, and you're on the ferry. Walk two more, and you're at Centraal.

The A'DAM Tower is the most visible landmark in Overhoeks: a 22-floor former Shell office building converted into Amsterdam's most distinctive mixed-use venue. From the ground floor, it's a neighbourhood hub: a hotel, clubs, restaurants, and the Lookout observation deck with a swing that extends over the edge.
Living next to an Amsterdam landmark is a different experience than visiting one. After a few weeks, it becomes the thing you point to when giving directions: and occasionally take visitors to on a clear day for the view south over the city.
The neighbourhood is best understood by walking it. Book a viewing of Badhuiskade 217 and arrive by ferry: you'll understand the location immediately.
